Note that certain punctuation characters such as * and $ have special meaning to the shell and may get transformed before passing these arguments along to the program. If you dont anchor the regexp (nor use -o ), the :space: and the + are superfluous. The commas are actually optional here, unless you're trying to literally match a comma. a-z,A-Z,0-9 inside a character set means match any one character a-z or A-Z or 0-9.
